To fully understand the value built into the McConnell - Marc tractors, you have to look at its origin. Not at the meticulous engineering of its design or at the intense quality control maintained along the assembly line, but at their real beginnings - as the dream of a New York State farm boy named Ward McConnell.

McConnell, now chairman and CEO of McConnell Manufacturing Co., Inc. grew up on a 40-cow dairy and cash crop farm near Prattsburg, New York. As he worked in his father's fields, barns and calf pens durinq his youth in the late 1930s, he developed a love of the land that would form the basis of his dedication to agriculture. And he learned the value of good equipment as he maneuvered his dad's WC Allis-Chalmers tricycle tractor over the hills and hollows of the family farm.

After attending college, McConnell left farming for a three-year stint in the U.S. Army. In 1956, one month out of the Army, the young McConnell signed an Oliver franchise and opened the McConnell Motor Company in a borrowed building in Prattsburg.

By 1959, the store was prospering, havinq just added a line of John Deere products. However, McConnell's real ambition was to design and build his own equipmemt. So in 1960, he liquidated his dealership and, on January 1, 1961, with the proceeds from this sale, he formed the McConnell Manufacturing Company Inc.

McConnell's first products in the early 1960's were clod busters, potato planters and potato bulk boxes. During the next two decades he was among the front-runners in the industry in producing potato chains, spring-tooth harrows, the Ontario Grain Drill, the Hesston Potato Harvester line and the BearCat-Western Land Roller, Grinder-Mixers and Seedbed Makers.

McConnell later purchased and then resold the Marshall Tractor Company (formerly Leyland Tractor ) of Gainsborough, England, in 1985. He bought the Chisholm Ryder Company which manufactured combines, bean harvesters and grape harvesters in 1986, and The United Company, makers of in-plant corn equipment in 1987. Distribution of remanufactured Kubota tractors purchased in Japan was also added in 1987. In 1988, he acquired the rights to the Massey-Ferguson 4000 Series 4WD Tractors. With upgraded power and options, these tractors became the Massey-Ferguson 5000 Series. He also manufactured and marketed the 900 and 1000 McConnell - Marc 4WD Tractors in the big 425 H.P. market. In 1994 this tractor was sold to AGCO Carporation where it has become the AgcoStar Tractor.

Today, nearly 40 years later, McConnell is continuing in his tradition of developing and delivering high quality equipment for the men in the field. The McConnell - Marc Tractors embody the highest ambitions of a one-time farm kid from New York State.

Although he has been a manufacturer for nearly 40 years, McConnell's first priority is still the man in the field. Meeting the most critical needs of the farmers who use his machines and the dealers who sell them, he says, is the only way to stay on top in today's super competitive agricultural world.

"Increasingly smaller profit margins for both dealers and buyers make it absolutely imperative to produce the most efficient and dependable tractors at the lowest possible cost." McConnell says. "Factors like a declining work force and fluctuating commodity markets force growers to buy equipment with their bottom line in mind."
